Third Party hardware on Hologram Cloud

Because the Dash is being discontinued, I am looking at using Particle Electron. Is it possible to still use Hologram SIM and portal but the Particle hardware?

Just read about it too but I can’t undrerstand why particle user have higher data consumption. Hourly short message will take about 6kb vs about 1kb with hologram “dash”. My knowledge is limited but would like to know why it is so different.
