SMS to phone number vs SMS using API vs non-geographic phone number

I normally send SMSs to my SIMS using /api/1/sms/incoming

But sometimes some part of Hologram’s (or its partner’s) network is slow, causing SMS delivery to be delayed by anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours. When this happens, I send SMSs to the SIM card’s non-geographic phone number (+88236000…) and they’re delivered immediately. There is clearly a different path that these SMSs take to get to the SIM. Maybe the 882 path is “circuit-switched.”

My question is if I purchase a phone number for a SIM, which path does it take?
I think the phone number uses the API because both messages appear in the device’s message history in the dashboard and have SMS_DT while messages to the non-geographic number do not appear in the device’s message history in the dashboard at all.

Please lmk, thanks.
